Mrs. Viola E. Schmitt

Wife to Otto Schmitt, was asked to fill out a questionnaire for her fiftieth
high school reunion,

and this is what she had to say:

CLASS OF JANUARY 1930-ST. LOUIS
QUESTIONAIRE
SOLDAN HIGH SCHOOL FIFTIETH YEAR CLASS REUNION
Please tell us what has happened to you in the last 50 years:

After graduation from Soldan, I worked for six months for an insurance company. That fall I went to Washington University were I received by A.B. in 1934 and M.S. in mathematics in 1935. I then became the Math and Latin departments in the Mendon, Illinois, high school for two years. Otto H. Schmitt and I were married in 1937 after he received his Ph.D. in Zoology and Physics from Washington U. We lived in London, England, for the next two years where Otto had fellowships to work with Professor A. V. Hill on nerve.

We were in the middle of the Atlantic in 1939 when Hitler invaded Poland. We were at the University of Minnesota in Minneapolis, with Otto rising from instructor to associate professor, until Pearl Harbor. In February Otto went to Greenwich, R.I., for research on finding submarines from aircraft while I worked for Al Nier on his U235 research. We got back together six months later on Long Island for war-related research at Airborne Instruments. We returned to the University of Minnesota in 1947 where Otto soon became a full professor, a position in which he is still active. I spend full time in his office typing letters and manuscripts, doing arithmetic when the computer fails, providing coffee and cookies for seminars, etc. I have gone with Otto on several trips to Europe and Japan as well as one of his two trips around the world. Seldom a dull moment!

Otto's Wife, Viola.
Not to be confused with his siter, also named Viola.
