Computerized Massage

by Otto H Schmitt

This device, not yet prototyped or fully designed, would be applied as a garment or applied to a region such as arm, leg, torso, neck, head, perhaps by Velcro attachments and adjustments. Whether electronically, hydraulically, pneumatically or fluidically controlled would be determined by prototype design.

The device would produce rhythmic waves of pressure like a masseur's stroke, the direction, intensity, single or double directionally or even stroke could be built in as programmable.

This device would apply 6o ischemic problems, those benefiting from the soothing touch, perhaps even while in a bath.

Advanced design would mold the pattern and perhaps even the fluidic control logic into a polymeric molded ( ) fabric. The laying fluid could be a gas (air) or a liquid (water) and the range of action determined by the pitch, spacing, and pressure, limited by the extensibility of the fabric.

With liquid or gas (e.g. freon) the garment could control temperature dynamically as in warm or cooling massage without medication or environmental heating or humidification. The device could be distinctly medical—therapeutic or for simple pleasure use.

The power unit could be an inexpensive compressor with self limiting pressure and could be open as with air or closed to return fluid. In selected injury, bladders could replace tubes for more vigorous action.
