Final Examination

Biophysics 5157 Spring 1992

Open book examination to be completed and returned by noon on Monday, June 15, 1992. You may use any available references or your notes, but do not consult with other students or staff regarding questions or answers.

1. We have spent a large amount of time this quarter in putting together in algorithmically understandable form, the principles of our three quarter course in Biophysical Science, stating with Biophysical Statics; the basic principles, structural features and diversified applicable dimensioned statistical analyses; Biophysical Dynamics, the study of Biophysical function which is the essence of Physiology, and finally, the Biophysical life systems organization for function, including brain and mind-consciousness processes. We have studied several universal Biophysical Principles such as the Code-Message Duality, Principles of Invention and Innovation, Marketing Strategies to bring new Biophysical Science into academic, industrial, medical , and government use such as neolinguistic integration of new basic ideas and the deliberate guidance of health and national productivity as by Biomimetic Science and Technology, the Santosha Index and Strand Epidemiology.

Take one project leadership direction in which R & D, political leadership, educational progress, dedicated computer usage could bring about a desired, defined result, and in several pages of detail offer your own innovative and ideological plan for realization of this desired outcome.

2. In a paragraph or two, remind us of the presentation you made to the class on your selected topic and identify the compact written form you turned in or turn it in if you have not yet done so.

3. Explain briefly how two nearly parallel adjacent nerve axons can cooperatively phase lock their running impulses for biologically useful function, and how this biological process can suggest new “Bivalent” computer designs that are simultaneously “digital” and “analog” and can point to other advanced computer designs such as those mimicing the sensory “Three Quadrature Compaction Algorithm” which has already had considerable success.

4. Explain how “negentropy” becomes a quantitatively valid measure of the amount of information in a biological or engineering system. Relate this, if you can, to the Code-Message Duality principle and its application to optimal communication or information storage systems, biological or technological.

5. Explain simplistically how currently popular “Artificial Intelligence” devices attempt to emulate processes that we have discovered in our studies of nervous systems, brain, mind and consciousness.

6. Fundamental Biophysical Science and Technology now enter prominently in multidisciplinary form in modern Medical System engineering, diagnosis, surgery, therapy, prognosis, record keeping, cost containment and quality of life enhancement.

Choose a phase of this enterprise in which you are, or can quickly become, expert and describe its special features and its promising near-future history.
